Sunfall Festival is ‘Absolutely Splendid’, College Times
11/18/98

Somewhere inside of us we have a voice that keeps us calm, that keeps us sane. The voice is beautiful and soft and it sings us to sleep. Unbeknownst to me, that voice belongs to a 20-year-old girl living here in Provo.

Amy Greetham is that voice and is the lead vocalist for the talented and awe-inspiring local (not for long) group Sunfall Festival. I recently had the opportunity to talk with them and find out more about them.

"We have these four individuals and we almost know exactly what each other is thinking. We can just look at each other and know," Greetham says. Seeing them play together (they did a private little concert just for me) reinforced that statement in my mind. As I watched all of their faces they had similar expression, there were all feeling the same emotion, the same joy, maybe even the same pain. They all truly enjoy the beauty they are creating.

The band physically formed in 1995, but apparently they have been spending their entire lives waiting and preparing for the right moment. Well, it’s here.

Greetham has been singing and writing songs for as long as she can remember. "I was four years old when I started singing into a recorder. I still have the cassettes."

She has a vocal style that’s extraordinarily different than what you will find from any other "local" band. It’s sweet and light and at the same time it has a depth and quality that you wouldn’t believe could come out of her.

Scott Wiley, who plays the guitar, is a true musician in his own right. He played in bands all through high school and even performed with Natalie Merchant while touring with the 10,000 Maniacs 1992 tour. He adds an unparalleled distinction and vibrancy to Greetham’s vocals.

Chris Peterson plays the drums and has been playing with Wiley since high school. One of his favorite aspects of being in a band is playing a live show. "The cool thing about playing a live show is that risk factor – Can they pull it off? Can they really extend themselves and still maintain control? That’s why I like playing live."

George Brunt plays the bass and was the last member to join the band. "Chris came up to me after a show. He asked me to come play on their CD. I really got into the music and they asked me to stay on full time."

The band has released two albums, Absolutely Splendid and On the Verge. Each album is masterfully created and chalk full of one great track after another. You can pick them up at local music stores.

So, could I sum up Sunfall Festival in a couple of words? You bet. "Absolutely Splendid."
