The sixteen songs on 23b range from DJ remixes of Monday 23 tracks, to live recordings and songs that just didn't quite fit onto Monday 23. Here's a little info on each of the tracks.

1. Wah Oh -
Sofina Sound remix |
I love hearing the same song presented in different forms. When Finn and Yoni from Sofina Sound offered to do a few remixes, I couldn't wait to hear the results. Wah Oh has always been one of my favorite songs and I was surprised to find that I liked it just as much with a completely different arrangement. - scott |

2. Normal
This was a tough one to throw from the album. I think it came down to the last minute, and we all just decided it didn't fit what we wanted Monday 23 to be about. It's still one of our favorites though. It first appeared on a compilation called "A Women's Worth" about a year ago. It was a project to help end abuse. It wasn't until we were asked to be on the compilation that the rest of us realized Amy was singing about a woman getting abused by some psycho, turning a bit psycho herself. Sometimes we need to pay more attention to her lyrics. - chris |

3. Mistakes
This was recorded in Scott's old house where he had a studio in the basement. We recorded 'What it Feels Like' and the demo of 'My Excuse' around the same. It was everybody's favorite song for about 2 weeks - especially fun to play it live. I think it was relegated to 'b-sides' status because we overplayed it; like a radio song or something. Like half the songs on that one Sarah McLaughlan CD - all great songs, but they just got the hell played out of them to the point where you'd listen to the radio and one would come on and you're all: "here we go again..." It's kinda like that. Also, Amy's scratch vocals on the chorus of this song used to sound like she was swearing. - george |

4. Mafia
Mafia was written and recorded live one night, soon after George left for law school. While Chris, Amy and I were wondering how we would possibly survive without Mr Brunt, and which songs would work without bass, this song just kind of appeared. - scott |

5. First Time I danced
- Sofina Sound remix |
I don't know what to say about this song except it's totally awesome. Ii heard this remix in Yoni's studio at the very beginning stages and I could tell he had the right idea about remixing a song, especially our song. He kept a very soulful groove and that particular feeling slow dancing usually invites. - amy |

6. Modern Way to Go - live
7. Falling In - live |
On November 6th, 1998 we invited those on our emailing list to head over to the studio for a small live show. We also had our friends Matt Harding and Molly Swank there to entertain those in attendance. It was a great night and produced a lot of good memories. Joining us on these songs are Dan Reneer and Matt Harding, both on guitar. - scott |

8. My Excuse
Nice 'chimy' open acoustic chords at the beginning. I also really like that way the drums come in and change the feel of the song on the darker chorus parts. I fought to keep the jazzy key changes at the end (in retrospect that silly ending may be why this song was better off as a b-side). I still really like this song though. - george |

9. Fearless
One of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. We played it in B instead of G because Amy is a girl and Roger Waters is a boy. I don't think Amy, Scott, or Chris had ever heard it before I suggested it as a cover. This was good because they each brought their own ideas to it (which is why it works as a cover). The Rhodes piano on the mellow choruses is a good indicator of our raw talent as musician's: nobody could play the part without messing up so Scott and I made it a duet - I played the left hand part and he played the right (or vice versa). Amy's "doo doo doo" near the end is particularly brilliant. The added bonus at the end of this track is merely one expression of an ongoing musical joke that just never gets old: major 3rd endings. I'd hate to be a major 3rd chord right now. - george |

10. George Screaming
We were laying down some final bass touches to "Anemic" and someone said we should have some screaming in the background of the song (I think it was a Weezer influence most likely). George was running about 20 minutes late to catch a plane in Salt Lake. We talked him into doing it, set up some mics, and hit record. You'll notice, he really doesn't even know the words. He finished screaming and ran out the door as we stayed around laughing. George has sent this apology: "I am deeply sorry to those whose ears this hurts. The one cool thing about this track is that you can hear 'Anemic' playing through my headphone monitors. But you have to listen carefully and I don't blame anyone for not wanting to listen carefully. Feel free to use the forward button on your cd players." - chris |
11. My Excuse - demo
This was another song recorded in the old studio (Scott's basement). Scott and George were joking around a lot that day, which you hear a snip of before the song. This is definitely an "in the garage" type of version compared to the other. Sounds kind of like it's our new song that we're so proud of but we don't want to show it to anyone yet. - amy |
12. I Go Crazy
I thought of the chorus in the shower and thought it was kinda catchy. I had no idea how to explain the song I was hearing in my head to the band so I sang the notes for them to play. Scott wrote the verses because I didn't have any ideas for them and Chris and George did best they could with my limited/goofy explanation. It turned out relatively how I heard it. A slightly, cheesy pop song with some power chords and love- anthem aim. - amy |
13. Moo Bloated
I would categorize this song on the 'lo-fi' end of the Sunfall Festival spectrum. The verses of this song didn't really lend themselves to singing, so Amy read some story about a cow that got sick. You have to listen carefully to make it out. The cow story is why this song has such a terrible, terrible title. I think the pre-chorus section of this song is very pretty. And sometimes the chorus drips with emotion. - george |

14. Victim
This song has had many incarnations. We never could quite get a version we wanted, so in the end, we had Sofina Sound produce it for the album version (which came out pretty nicely, actually). This version captures Victim in its more raw and edgier stage. We all agreed it sounded too "bratty" overall, and sent it on it's way to the B-sides - chris |
15. Minor Song
This is a good example of "on the spot writing/recording". We recorded this right before we recorded "Nieces and Nephews," which is why there is such a somber feel for Nieces and Nephews. I really like this song because Scott had that cool guitar part so it started feeding our imaginations for whatever came out. Scott was barefoot and was tapping his foot on the floor and Yoni was sitting in the floor pounding out a rhythm on the leg of the piano, which resonated through the floor and was picked up on the only mic in the room. It has a slight organic feel - probably because there isn't much to it and it gets kind of intense. This is one of my favorites on the b sides. - amy |

16. Your Words Shot Through - Sofina
Sound remix
Another great Sofina Sound remix. This version actually was finished before the album version. Once we heard Finn and Yoni's take on the song we realized that it worked better than what we had on the album. So it was back to the studio to re-cut the drums and acoustic guitars. - scott |
